Data publishing and data standards eLearning modules for Local Government
This work contributes to the LGA "Better use of data" programme 2016".
An easy way to learn about publishing data and using standards for local government has now been published. The Open Data Institute and the Local Government Association have developed three online eLearning modules for supporting local authorities to publish data, improve the quality of data, and use common standards to be able to more easily share, combine and compare data for further use and analysis across authorities. Including case studies from councils demonstrating the benefits of data publishing and the use of standards.
The three learning modules are:
Module 1: Open Data: Making Transparency Work - where you will learn the background to why transparency and open data availability in local government is important and how benefits are realised.
Module 2: Open Data: Making Publishing Work - where you will learn the recommended approach, stages of preparation and available tools that guide the publishing of your data openly and consistently to merge with the entire local government sector.
Module 3: Open Data: Making Standards Work - where you will learn about the information standards that guide a consist approach to data publishing in local government to unlock the potential for easier discovery and re-use of your published data by wide ranging data consumers.
And we have supporting webinars too
To assist further, the LGA facilitated a series of six webinars hosted by the Open Data Institute for local authorities throughout May to July 2016 to further explore topics covered in the modules and to answer any questions. These webinars were recorded on YouTube and can be viewed at your leisure but selecting any of the following links.

This webinar walked participants through all three learning modules (Making Transparency Work, Making Publishing Work and Making Standards Work) and answered questions. You can watch a YouTube recording of this webinar here. It lasts around 100 minutes but you can come and go as you please!
24th May - Better use of data - In Focus: Inventories and Data Quality
